ADOPTION
Adoption Lawyers Based in Chattanooga
Adopting a child can be an exciting time for you and your family, but the adoption process is heavily guided by laws and regulations on both the state and federal levels. This can be overwhelming for prospective parents to navigate on their own, but our dedicated team of adoption attorneys can help make sure things go smoothly.
Our Services
Our attorneys are prepared to handle a number of cases, including:
Contested adoption: at least one biological parent of the child does not consent to the adoption. For cases in which mediation is not an option, the child’s other biological parent and/or adoptive parent may sue for termination of the non-consenting party’s parental rights.
Uncontested adoption: both biological parents consent to the adoption. If the child is to be adopted by a close relative, the adoption process is relatively simple. If the adoptive parent is not a close relative, there are additional home inspections and other proceedings that must take place.
International adoption: these cases involve United States immigration law in addition to the adoption laws of the child’s birth country.
Adult adoption: in some cases, when a child’s biological parent did not consent to their adoption as a minor, they may consent to their own adoption as an adult after turning 18.
Adopting a Child in Tennessee
Depending on the circumstances surrounding an adoption, the process may include terminating biological parental rights, determining eligibility of adoptive parents, evaluating that the home is suitable for a child, and petitioning for adoption in court.
